In its fourth year as part of the Rally America Series, the Northwest Colorado Rally is becoming known as one of America’s toughest rallies. The fast section of gravel roads and open areas combine to make this race a special destination for drivers and co-drivers. The wide-open course is particularly great for spectators to enjoy the fast-paced action with spectacular open viewing areas.

“The variety in the different racing stages is pretty significant,” said Jim Gill, event organizer of Rally Colorado. “We have everything from high speed to tight and technical that makes these courses so memorable.”

Rally fans will enjoy many opportunities to meet with the rally teams during the weekend. On Friday at 5:30pm, fans can watch rally videos and take photos at the Fan Festival on 5th and Lincoln, downtown Steamboat Springs. Fans will receive an added bonus at the “Miller Lite Video Fan Fest” on Saturday when the Ferrari Club of America – Rocky Mountain Region will showcase their cars with the rally teams. Festivities begin at 6:15pm at the same location as Friday’s festival.

After the fan festivals, fans are welcome to watch the rally from designated viewing areas. Instructions can be found at http://www.rallycolorado.org.

Members of the media can find out what it is like to speed down a two-mile stage in a rally car from 11:30am – 1:30pm at the “Miller Lite Media/Sponsor stage” on Friday. To reserve a media ride please refer to the contacts in this press release.

About 40 teams are expected to participate in Rally Colorado. Aiding the driver during the race is the co-driver who has precise course directions in a route book with instructions measured in hundredths of a mile.

Cars competing in the rally are street legal vehicles modified for safety. The cars are separated into six classes ranging from stock to highly modified. Cars popular in rally racing include makes such as Audi, Dodge, Mazda, Hyundai and Subaru.

“Literally every bridge had people waving and cheering us along with many hanging the Saltire from the railings” said Grant Hendry, who led the McRae Gathering convoy. “It turned what was an already memorable event into a truly amazing and emotional occasion.”

The convoy re-gathered at SWRT’s headquarters on Sunday morning, before being led away by Colin’s original 1996 Impreza rally car that helped take Subaru to their second world rallying Manufacturers’ Championship.

In a fitting finale, a sign almost half a mile long and made up of 1086 Subarus spelt out COLIN MCRAE and the Scottish Saltire to set a new official Guinness World Record – smashing the previous record by more than 800 cars. With time for just one more before its conclusion, the event then broke a second Guinness World Record by creating the largest parade of cars of a single marque around the Warwick test venue.

It is estimated that the event has raised nearly £40,000 for the McRae charities.

As the dusty gravel roads became cleaner and grippier with each passing car, Petter Solberg and Phil Mills made the most of their starting position of seventh on the road to set some much improved times. The duo slipped into sixth place overall after the first stage, and as the battle at the front intensified in the closing kilometres, Solberg and Mills kept strong heads and conquered the Whaanga demon to leap into fourth position by the day’s end.

“Rally New Zealand last year produced the closest WRC finish in recent years, and this year we have seen yet again an incredible twist on the final day” said David Richards, Subaru World Rally Team Principal. “Petter and Phil did a solid job in what was a much more positive day for us. Their efforts were rewarded with a last-minute leap to fourth position, which goes some way to consoling what has overall been a tough weekend for the team. Chris similarly upped his pace this morning which was encouraging and we’ve certainly learned a lot from the testing he has carried out over the last couple of days.”

“It’s been a tough rally for us but fourth place is good after this weekend” said Petter Solberg. “What an incredible finish, the Whaanga stage was like a scrap yard! Today the car felt the best it has this weekend, so we are definitely making steps in the right direction but it’s taking a little time. Of course, we are here for winning though so we have some more steps to take, but we have to lift our heads now and keep working so we can start to fight at the front.”

Atkinson and Prévot started the day well, going second fastest on the opening stage, but their improved form was unfortunately not to last. Missing the afternoon’s excitement, the duo were forced into retirement having demonstrated more competitive pace until they nudged a bank on the inside of a corner and damaged their radiator. They were brought to a standstill 21.3 kilometres into the stage as a result of overheating, and the pair were unable to re-start their engine.

“Ok, this weekend has been tough for us, especially after our third position on the last gravel rally in Finland” said Chris Atkinson. “It’s disappointing that we had to retire today. We were testing some suspension components, and under braking the car slid straight on and we nosed into a bank and damaged the radiator, so that was it. Now we have a little gap to look at what we can do ahead of Spain.”

The Subaru Impreza WRC2008 is still in its infancy in the championship, and although its sense of belonging makes it easy to accept already as a series long-termer, New Zealand is only the fifth rally for the car.

Next event
The World Rally Championship heads to Spain next for Rally Catalunya Costa Daurada, round 12 of the series. The penultimate asphalt rally of the year, it will be the second tarmac rally for the new Impreza WRC2008. A flat-out blast through the fast and flowing mountain stages of Tarragona, Catalunya is the quickest asphalt rally of the year and also the most similar to a circuit race, characterised by wide smooth roads and sweeping corners. The event is based in the coastal resort town of Salou, further south along the coastline from Barcelona in the Tarragona region. The service park is based in the PortAventura holiday theme park, though eighteen stages and 353.62 kilometres of competition won’t give the drivers much time to enjoy the roller-coasters.

In addition to the Escape and Mariner, the Ford Mustang, F-150, Expedition and Lincoln Navigator also feature soy-based foam seat cushions.

Ford showcased its industry-leading work with soy foams in 2003 on the Model U concept, which featured soy-based seat cushions as well as a soy-based resin composite tailgate.

Now, Ford’s Plastics Research team has formulated the chemistry to replace a staggering 40 percent of the standard petroleum-based polyol used in seating materials with a soy-derived material. This breakthrough will make a significant impact on the environment while reducing dependency on imported petroleum.

According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, soy-based products have only one-quarter of the level of total environmental impact of petroleum-based products. Most automakers today use 100 percent petroleum-based polyol foam. Each vehicle contains an average of 30 pounds of petroleum-based foam in its seat backs, seat cushions, armrests, instrument panels and headliners.

The 2009 Escape and Mariner also will continue to use the same recycled fabric seating surfaces as the 2008 model. In 2008, the Escape became the first vehicle to use fabric supplied by Interface Fabrics, Inc., which is produced from 100 percent post-industrial waste - defined as anything intended for retail use that never makes it to the consumer. This can be anything from plastic intended for pop bottles to un-dyed polyester fibers.

This plastic and polyester is processed, spun into yarn, dyed and woven into seat fabric. Recycling waste otherwise intended for landfills has obvious environmental benefits. Interface Fabrics estimates that Ford’s use of post-industrial recycled materials, rather than virgin fibers, could conserve an estimated 600,000 gallons of water, 1.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents and more than 7 million kilowatt hours of electricity.

The 2009 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner also offer a new, 171-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with intake variable cam timing (i-VCT) for enhanced fuel economy and performance.

The 2009 Escape and Mariner’s new engine delivers a best-in-class 20 mpg (city) and 28 mpg (highway) in fuel economy when equipped with the new six-speed transmission, as compared to the previous model’s smaller-displacement 2.3-liter engine and four-speed automatic.

Meanwhile, the Escape Hybrid and Mercury Hybrid remain the most fuel-efficient SUVs on the planet, with a city, highway rating of 34 and 31, thanks to its new 2.5-liter four-cylinder that uses the fuel-efficient Atkinson Cycle for combustion.

Another advantage of the CONTI® GREEN RUNNER is that it creates less of a noise buildup than chain drives do. Belts bring rubber instead of steel into contact with metal, generating less noise. Combined with innovative oval pulley technology, these timing belts allow for design widths that are 30 percent narrower than for conventional timing belt drives. The original advantage of chains – narrower design width – is thus eliminated. What’s more, for less complicated drives, belts render superfluous the tensioning rail required to date for chain drives.

The CONTI® GREEN RUNNER has already clocked more than 240,000 kilometers in various vehicle tests and thus demonstrated that it can last for an entire engine life. “Overall, chains forfeit the advantage they previously had over belts. Much to the contrary, the case for belts is now all the more compelling,” notes Schulte. A special version of the belt with an oil-resistant impregnation can also be used in oil environments, making it a wise alternative to existing chain drives.

“We already have enough pressure, with two of our drivers sitting just two points from the lead for the series Drivers’ Championship,” Aquilante added with a grin, “and now we’re going to be watched by friends and family plus a sizable contingent of employees from our primary sponsor, Subaru of America, Inc.”

The ICY Racing / Phoenix Performance outfit’s 4,000 sq. ft. race shop is in Phoenixville, Pa., just west of Philadelphia. Aquilante lives nearby in Chester Springs, and partner Dave Rosenblum is just down the road in Langhorne. Most of the team’s crew calls the area home, as does one of the drivers, 20-year old Andrew Aquilante.

On the other side of the Delaware River, team driver Kris Skavnes makes his home in Sparta, N.J. Skavnes and co-driver, Chuck Hemmingson, currently sit 2nd in the Drivers’ Championship just two points from the current standings leader. Hemmingson resides in Des Moines, Ia.

The team’s Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B race cars are originally manufactured at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA), in Lafayette, Ind., as factory showroom vehicles and prepared by ICY Racing / Phoenix Performance.

“The competition in the Koni Challenge Street Tuner class has been at a high level this season,” admits James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA), “but our race team has really persevered.”

Adds Han, “The team’s efforts in showcasing the performance of our Legacy cars, which are so closely based upon the stock platform, have been impressive and having Kris and Chuck so close to earning the Drivers’ title is certainly exciting. Each race is important to us but this one is special based on its close proximity to our corporate location. Being able to rely on the continued support of SIA, our manufacturing plant, has also proved a boon to us. Without a doubt, Subaru associates from both SOA and SIA will be cheering on the Subaru Road Racing Team this weekend.”

The Millville race will be televised by SPEED TV to air Sept. 7 at 2pm ET.

The Subaru Road Racing Team is sponsored by Subaru of America, Inc., Subaru Tecnica International (STI), Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT), Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA), Automotive Racing Products, Lista, Rotary Lifts, JRZ, EcuTek, Perrin, Cusco, Carbonetic, Hawk Brakes, Quarter Master Industries, Disc Brakes Australia, Freem, and Racing Radios. The cars are prepared by ICY/Phoenix Racing.

“We were out-driven all day today, and yesterday,” said Pastrana late Saturday. “It really sucks to see him on the side of the stage right at the end.”

Block and Gelsomino were unharmed, but it is believed their competition Subaru WRX STi took heavy damage.

The victory all but assures Pastrana the 2008 Rally America title. He would have to fail to finish both of the next two rounds, while either Block or Andrew “ACP” Comrie-Picard took both wins – an unlikely scenario for Pastrana, who has developed a maturity this season that has earned him a series of reliable top results.

Second place went to Kyle Sarasin, who battled through a host of mechanical problems to finish on the podium.

“We’re excited,” said Sarasin. “We had a ton of problems at this rally and to finish on the podium—and in second, no less—we’re pretty happy.”

Sarasin and co-driver Mikael Johansson fought through a turbocharger failure on Friday and transmission failure on Saturday.

Australian Andy Pinker and co-driver Robbie Durant earned the third spot on the podium. The duo had not been optimistic for such a strong finish, after they struck a rock on Day 1, and took damage to their car that dropped him to 11th place.

“The two Subaru drivers were pushing hard all day and I thought one might make a mistake today – I just didn’t know who.”

After Round 7, the top three in the championship standings remain unchanged. Pastrana extended his lead over second-place Andrew “ACP” Comrie-Picard – who opted to sit out this event after his end-over-end flip at the X Games earlier this month. Block remains in third place.

Comrie-Picard was not the only top driver absent from the contest after a brutal X Games competition that saw many series frontrunners take heavy damage to their competition cars. Tanner Foust, Matthew Johnson and Pat Moro also chose not to enter this event.

“It’s too bad for the championship to see so many guys had cars that couldn’t be repaired in time to be here and compete,” said Pastrana.

Heath Nunnemacher and co-driver Kim DeMotte drove a strong event to take the Production GT class win, while veteran Doug Shepherd and co-driver Karen Wagner set the fastest two-wheel drive time in their Group 5 Dodge SRT 4. The Production class win went to brothers Jan and Jody Zedril in their Mitsubishi Lancer, and the sole finishers in the Group 2 class were Silvio Alva and co-driver Ben Slocum.

The Ojibwe Forests Rally began Friday afternoon with a spectator stage at the Bemidji Speedway, where teams kicked up the dust for roaring spectators on a quarter-mile oval course, before moving to the sandy forest stages.

The event opened Thursday night with a crowd-pleasing freestyle motocross exhibition from “Cowboy” Kenny Bartram and Pastrana at the Bemidji Speedway. Bartram, a two-time X Games gold medalist in moto events, has been a regular threat on the U.S. rally scene since his 2006 series debut. He finished the event in fifth-place overall.

Rally car racing is considered the extreme sport of automobile racing and is often described simply as “real cars, real roads, real fast.” This all-season motorsport sees drivers and their co-drivers take modified road cars to the limit as they achieve blistering speeds over courses that cover more than 100 miles of gravel, dirt or snow-covered roads.

The 2008 Rally America National Championship series consists of nine exciting events that take place in a range of challenging weather and road conditions in a season that extends from February to October. Throughout the year, teams take on everything from the forest logging roads in Minnesota, to the high-altitude Yampa River Valley in Northwest Colorado, and the Pacific Northwest forest and coast paths.

The series moves west to Steamboat Springs on September 13 and 14 for the next round, Rally Colorado.

Sydney-based rising star George Miedecke will race his father - accomplished racer Andrew Miedecke - on a racetrack for the first time, in the Australian Manufacturers Championship for Production Cars.

George, 22, currently holds a share of the series lead, and a race win at Phillip Island in June aboard his Hyundai Tiburon has helped the Korean marque take the lead of the manufacturer’s standings.

Andrew was part of George’s crew that weekend, but this time he’ll be racing a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX in the class-based championship, which features handicap, reverse-grid races.

“I’m looking forward to racing against Dad,” George Miedecke, who is also a front-runner in the V8 Ute Series, said.

“We’ve both done Targa and some go-karting, but this will be the first time we’ve actually raced against each other on a circuit, it should be a lot of fun.

“The Phillip Island weekend couldn’t have gone much better; hopefully we can have another strong run and maintain our positions in the drivers and manufacturers standings.”

Enjoying a stellar year, John and Ben Falk lead their respective classes of the Tankworld Australian Supertruck Nationals.

John, a former Supertruck regular who returned to the series this year, leads the outright standings with two rounds remaining, while teenager Ben holds the upper-hand over his father in the Co-Drivers points.

“I really enjoy racing against Ben,” John Falk said.

“We operate as a family team when we go to a race meeting, which is what motorsport is all about.

“Out on the track, we race hard and treat each other as competitors but afterwards we can always go back to the pits and have a laugh about it.”

Western Sydney resident Peter Green will race against two of his sons in the Don Green Engineering HQ races.

Peter Green Jr, who is currently second in the New South Wales HQ Series, and Clinton Green will take on Peter, who looks forward to every opportunity the family gets to go racing together.

“It’s fantastic, we all have a ball,” Peter Green said.

“HQ Racing is a great chance for us all to catch up and have some fun.

“I’m trying to bring in some team orders that they have to let me win, but I haven’t been successful so far!”

Also battling it out for father-and-son honours will be Greg and John Wood in HQs and Stan and Michael Seton in the Supertrucks, with Sydney’s Leigh and Ben Porter competing in the CXC Global Formula Vee races.

Completing the card of racing is the Kerrick Sports Sedan National Series and a near-capacity grid of Porsches in the combined Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge and Porsche 944 Series field.

The weekend of action kicks off on Saturday morning, with practice and qualifying before four races in the afternoon
A great family day out, Sunday features a full program of 18 races.

Tickets are just $15 on Saturday and $35 on Sunday, or $45 for a weekend pass.

Child (11-16 years) tickets are $10 on Saturday and $15 on Sunday, with kids 10 and under free all weekend.
