After seven rounds of the 2007 NOPI Drift Championship Blake Fuller of Sarasota, FL with an impressive driving record of all top ten finishes stood on the podium as the series most consistent driver. This result was even more impressive when you take into account that Blake Fuller acted not only as the driver, but also helped manage the team that ran the series. The 2007 NOPI Drift Championship was extremely exciting to follow as the Braille Auto team led the championship in the beginning of the year and then fought for first place all the way till the final round where a rare car failure left the team watching from the paddock area as the final round unfolded! As the smoke was clearing at the final event in Atlanta Motor Speedway in front of 50,000 fans, the calculators went into action to figure out who would win the championship. In the end, the final goal of winning the championship went to another driver, but Blake Fuller remained on the podium!
2007 was an opportunity for Blake Fuller to not only drive, but also manage the racing team. From 2004-2006 Blake Fuller raced for other teams while operating his company, Braille Auto which manufactures lightweight products for all
types of street vehicles and produces components that are original equipment on the World’s fastest production cars. While touring the country this
year in an effort to win the 2007 NOPI Drift Championship, Blake Fuller learned more about the sport of drifting and what it took to not only be a driver,
but also a team manager. Blake explains, “I have competed in many professional level events over the years, in recent years I would fly in as the
driver and the car was ready to go for me. This year we took a chance by fielding our own car. It took some adjustment as family and employees all
had to learn the best way to operate the team in an attempt at a year long championship. There are so many factors that go into preparing for and
competing in a year long series that is spread across the Nation. We had to focus on reliability and consistency. While we just missed the overall
championship, our position on the podium tells me that we made some great choices this year regarding our sponsors, products and set up. I can’t
wait to have a chance of applying the things that we learned from this year into our new cars for next year. When I look at the other teams that
surrounded us in the championship this year, these teams had been competing in series for many years and our accomplishment feels just that much
better. As with any championship, our podium at NOPI took a full commitment from all our sponsors and our team for which I am truly thankful and
indebted!”
In fact, due to his success at driving this year along with the large amounts of Television and print exposure, Blake is negotiating handling the team management details to another company to allow him to focus on what he really
does best, drive! This year Blake was the only driver in the NOPI Drift championship to be in the top 10 at every event. This was an amazing feat in a sport where
crashes and mechanical failures are part of the excitement. Blake’s professionalism shone through at every event this year where often a small mistake in qualifying can
put a driver out of the top 16 finals and leave a driver to be a spectator. One example is when Blake managed a 6th place finish when the 350Z was repaired from
an incident using suspension pieces from the front of another racers car installed into the back suspension to be able to get the car back on track during the finals.
Definitely not the ideal set up, but Blake still managed to put the car in a top position and excite the judges and the fans.
Speaking of fans, Blake Fuller’s driving style has quickly become a crowd favorite with his over the top, yet precise driving style that complements the beautiful Brailleauto.com Nissan
350z Drift car. Blake’s style of driving was known to have the Braille Auto Racing’s Nissan 350z titanium exhaust echoing near redline with the sound of over 400 Vortech Supercharged
horsepower while transforming its Maxxis drift tires into plumes of white smoke inches from the walls. “Often when on course I have to remember there are two crowds, the judges AND the fans
packed into the stands. I try to balance the vehicle so as to appear out of control for the fans that have never seen drifting before, but also to show control to the judges that are looking at every
precise movement of the car, all the while trying to make it look easy!” It seems to be working just fine as at the NOPI National, where the final round of the championship took place fans packed
the house to get a look at the Braille Auto Nissan 350z in action and quickly packed the infield of Atlanta Motor Speedway to be on site at the announcements for the championship standing were
announced with Blake Fuller standing on the podium!
