The Peugeot 308 hatchback will be launched in Europe in the autumn; it will replace the 307 hatchback, which has been an important car in the Peugeot range with worldwide sales exceeding 3,000,000. It will be produced in France, at the production sites of Sochaux and Mulhouse and will be available in three and five door versions. The 308 will also be a very environmentally friendly vehicle.

Peugeot Sport left Le Mans yesterday very pleased after completing the planned test programme for its maiden visit and setting the fastest lap.

The 908 HDi FAP driven by Sébastien Bourdais posted the fastest recorded time of 3m 26.707s, over 1.5 seconds faster than the second placed Audi R10.

The 1.6 litre THP (Turbo High Pressure) turbocharged petrol engine which powers Peugeot’s 207 CC, GT and soon to be released GTi models has won the 2007 International Engine of the Year Award in the 1.4 litre to 1.8 litre category.

In the wake of the superb victory of Marc Gene and Nicolas Minassian’s Peugeot 908 HDi FAP at the high-speed circuit of Monza at an average speed of more than 200kph, Team Peugeot Total is now looking to pursue the car’s development at a very different type of track as the 2007 Le Mans Series moves on to Valencia.

The Spanish venue is indeed much slower, with only the start/finish straight providing any sort of break from the otherwise twisty layout. In spite of the fact that the organisers have purposely limited the number of cars that can race, it promises to be even more difficult to overtake at Valencia than it was at Monza where Peugeot’s drivers complained about the trouble they encountered overtaking certain competitors.

Following its win at Monza three weeks ago, the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP showed the same winning form in Valencia. It was, however, this time the turn of Pedro Lamy and Stephane Sarrazin to finish in first place after leading practically from the start without the slightest problem.

In a repeat performance of their success at Monza, both Peugeot 908 HDi FAPs qualified on the front row of the grid. It was Marc Gene with his local knowledge at the wheel of the No 7 908 HDi FAP that took pole position by just 0.441s from the No 8 car driven by Pedro Lamy.

Peugeot’s latest single-make championship – the 207 Spider Cup – will serve as the support race for the five European rounds of the 2007 Le Mans Series, as well as for two other major meetings in France. The season’s curtain-raiser at Monza saw French drivers monopolising the two podiums, but Spain’s Sanchez and Espinosa will be out to take revenge as the competition moves on to their home soil in Valencia… It is even more of a possibility as the series leader Maxime Dubrulle will be away as well.
