The tenth of 11 races in the 2009 Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge series season, this weekend’s 2.5-hour run on the massive 4.486-mile, 24-turn road course west of Salt Lake City in the Utah desert, known as Miller Motorsports Park, will take place on Friday, Sept. 18 at 4pm ET. Andrew Aquilante and Kristian Skavnes, co-drivers in the Subaru Road Racing Team’s (SRRT) #111 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B, will enter the race sitting in second place in the Street Tuner class points, 25 points from the championship lead.

Subaru Road Racing Team (SRRT) drivers Andrew Aquilante and Kristian Skavnes came into Saturday’s Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge 24 points out of the lead for the series Driver Championship. Following the two-hour, 30-minute race at Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Ala., the duo sit six points closer to that goal, thanks to a third place finish, only 10 seconds away from the top rung of the winners circle. The points leader finished seventh today. The team’s #111 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B., prepared by Phoenix Performance in Phoenixville, Pa., headed the 21-car pack twice – for four total laps - during Aquilante’s 45-lap stint. Subaru is one of nine car manufacturers represented in the KONI series’ Street Tuner class.

Subaru is one of nine car manufacturers who go head-to-head on the race tracks in the series’ Street-Tuner class. “Of course we’d like to have finished higher,” said team owner Joe Aquilante, “but we led the race, and the Subaru was still capable of turning laps that were faster than our qualifying speeds late into the race.”

As auto racing accidents go, this was relatively small, but the repercussions cost the Subaru Road Racing Team (SRRT) valuable points toward their goal of the Manufacturer and Driver Championships in the Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge series. On lap 94 of last Saturday’s 134-lap race on the 1.53-mile Lime Rock Park circuit near Lakeville, Conn., an over-anxious driver running behind SRRT driver Kristian Skavnes nudged Skavnes off the track while the Sparta, N.J., driver was running seventh in the Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B race car.

Subaru Road Racing Team drivers Andrew Aquilante and Kris Skavnes enter the third race of the Grand-Am KONI Challenge tied with two other drivers for the series points lead, following a fifth place finish in Saturday’s thrilling 2h30m race at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Fla. The 30-car race featured a stirring drive by the 21-year old Aquilante, of Phoenixville, who started the race from the pole position, which he earned by a minuscule 0.003 seconds on the last lap of Friday’s qualifying sessions.

Both SRRT teammates, Andrew Aquilante, Chester Springs, Pa., and Kris Skavnes, Sparta, N.J., drove well enough to lead the race during their respective stints. Aquilante qualified the #111 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B on the pole in a field of 32 other Street Tuner competitors and led the first 29 laps.
