The very last Subaru Impreza World Rally Car, WRC2008-011 has been delivered to its customer. The car was first used by the Subaru World Rally Team in 2008, but was fully rebuilt to the original specification.  Ironically, the previous World Rally Car built by Prodrive was also the very first it ever made, Impreza WRC97-001.  This car was recently fully restored for a customer.

The Impreza N2010 uses the new larger 33mm air restrictor, introduced by the FIA to help balance the performance of Group N and the unrestricted Super2000 rally cars.  Increasing the restrictor diameter from 32 to 33mm, fitting high flow fuel injectors and recalibrating the ECU increases peak power by 20 bhp, but more significantly, improves torque and responsiveness throughout the rev range.

Following Gronholm and the Prodrive Impreza’s strong run during the first day of Rally Portugal, Prodrive is aiming to do further WRC rounds in 2009. Despite only having little time behind the wheel of the Prodrive Impreza WRC2008 and not having competed for nearly 18 months, Gronholm comfortably held second place during day one of Rally Portugal.  Having got to grips with his pace notes and becoming increasingly comfortable with the car, Gronholm was aiming to pick up the pace on day two with a target of a podium finish.  Unfortunately, he ran wide on a corner early in the first stage of the day, clipping a tree and rolling the car.  The resultant damage to the engine forced him to retire.

When Marcus Gronholm drives over the start ramp for Rally Portugal today, it will be 25 years since Prodrive first competed at the 1984 Qatar Rally.  Then, a Prodrive-prepared Porsche 911 SC RS, driven by Saeed Al Hajri, won on its debut and went on to bring the Rothmans Porsche Rally Team the Middle East Rally Championship title. Qatar was the first of 129 rally wins for Prodrive, with victories coming with four different manufacturers in the Porsche 911, the MG 6R4, BMW M3 and for the last two decades with the Subaru Legacy and Impreza. 

The Prodrive Impreza WRC2008, which Marcus Gronholm will drive at the Rally of Portugal, has successfully completed its first shakedown. Gronholm will drive the test car in Wales this week, before undertaking a full two day pre-event test in Spain next week.  This means the two-time World Rally Champion will have three days to familiarise himself with the new car before starting his first World Rally Championship event in nearly 16 months. The Prodrive Impreza WRC2008 is fundamentally the same car used by the Subaru World Rally Team last season.

The Prodrive GT1 alloy wheel is the latest addition to an exclusive line of wheels for the Subaru range of vehicles. It is available in an 8.5” width to suit the latest generation Impreza STi ((2005MY on), and a 7.5” width for all other Impreza, Legacy and Forester models. The wheel, styled in house at Prodrive, has a twin spoke design which complements the sharpened features on the latest generation of Subaru vehicles. Finite Element Analysis was extensively used to optimize the strength and stiffness in the design for the minimum weight. The result is an 18”x 8.5” wheel that is lighter than the standard STi 17”x 8”.
