High-performance charge air lines and the heatable hose line module for SCR technology are the highlights of ContiTech Fluid Technology’s participation at the Society of Automotive Engineers’ (SAE) Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress in Rosemont, Illinois, USA, from October 7 to 9, 2008. After a successful showing last year, ContiTech is returning to the professional get-together and exhibition for a second time (booth 623/625).

The CONTI® GREEN RUNNER can be used in place of timing chains in the engine, where it effects a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to three grams per kilometer driven. It is used for the synchronization of camshaft and crankshaft, displaying 30 percent less frictional loss than a chain drive. This cuts fuel consumption by as much as 0.2 liters per 100 kilometers, which, in turn, lowers CO2 emissions by 3 grams per kilometer. “With the EU’s current statutory limit of 120 grams, this represents a substantial contribution to emissions reduction,” explains Hermann Schulte, head of belt system development at the ContiTech Power Transmission Group. “European carmakers are increasingly cashing in on this advantage. In the next engine generation, they will again find themselves more frequently resorting to belts in place of chains.”

High honors for the two-tone PVC foam laminate from Benecke-Kaliko in Hanover: Johnson Controls, a Benecke-Kaliko customer, captured 2nd place in the 11th Automotive Division Award of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Central Europe. The two-tone door trim for the new BMW 5 Series was cited. Benecke-Kaliko supplies the PVC foam laminate for the trim. The award was conferred for a new production process that allows for manufacture of two-tone door trim without use of separate components. Equipment and process innovations make possible for the first time the production of a one-piece door beam made of natural fibers with two-tone film facing.

Higher output with the same engine displacement, yet emission levels that are unchanged or even lower – this is the type of equation engine manufacturers like to set up these days. ContiTech Fluid Technology has developed hoses for temperature control, drainage and lubrication that are up to meeting the requirements of modern exhaust management systems.
Ever more compact designs and increasingly high temperatures – the latest ContiTech exhaust management hose lines are up against just such basic parameters. “We are able to satisfy these parameters by employing high-performance materials,” explains Jens Jünemann from ContiTech Hose in Northeim. Silicone ensures the requisite temperature stability and, depending on the medium, fluororubber can guarantee oil-resistance.
