Ski Town USA will once again be host to one of the premier rally car racing events in the country. Rally Colorado, formerly known as the Colorado Cog Rally, is the 8th event out of 9 in the Rally America Series. Held in Steamboat Springs from September 11 - 14th, and commonly known by skiers for its “champagne powder” on the slopes, Rally Colorado will welcome the nation’s top rally teams fresh after the Ojibwe Forests Rally in Minnesota. Subaru Rally Team USA, Travis Pastrana, extended his lead at Ojibwe and looks to cross the finish line in Colorado to defend his 2007 Rally America title. Only 11 points separates 2nd through 5th place in the overall standings, and both Ken Block and Andrew Pinker seek to gain ground over Andrew Comrie-Picard, who sits in the 2nd spot.

More than 1000 Subaru owners and thousands more fans celebrated the life of Colin McRae over the weekend of 30-31 August, smashing two world records on the way. The convoy of an estimated 1100 Subaru cars, which at its peak stretched for 30 miles, left Colin’s home town of Lanark on Saturday morning, led by his father Jimmy. Nine hours and 300 miles later, the snake of Subarus arrived at the headquarters of the Subaru World Rally Team in Banbury, UK. Demonstrating the extent to which Colin’s memory endures, thousands of fans packed every available motorway bridge along the route to be a part of this fantastic tribute.

Petter Solberg and Phil Mills finished the 38th running of Rally New Zealand in fourth position overall after a dramatic re-shake of the leaderboard on the rally’s penultimate stage. The Whaanga Coast test was the most beautiful of the rally, skirting the Pacific Ocean, but proved a bitter femme fatale for three of the leaders as the competition at the front raged to a nail-biting conclusion. The final day of Repco Rally New Zealand was a short, sharp affair, but was far and away the most dramatic and spectacular of the rally. Before a final running of the Mystery Creek spectator stage, four full-length speed tests took the crews west towards the surfers’ paradise of Raglan. A combination of intense pressure and the fast and unforgiving rock-strewn roads of the penultimate Whaanga Coast stage gave the event an unexpected sting in the tail that turned the leaderboard on its head in remarkable fashion.

The CONTI® GREEN RUNNER can be used in place of timing chains in the engine, where it effects a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to three grams per kilometer driven. It is used for the synchronization of camshaft and crankshaft, displaying 30 percent less frictional loss than a chain drive. This cuts fuel consumption by as much as 0.2 liters per 100 kilometers, which, in turn, lowers CO2 emissions by 3 grams per kilometer. “With the EU’s current statutory limit of 120 grams, this represents a substantial contribution to emissions reduction,” explains Hermann Schulte, head of belt system development at the ContiTech Power Transmission Group. “European carmakers are increasingly cashing in on this advantage. In the next engine generation, they will again find themselves more frequently resorting to belts in place of chains.”

Everybody is nervous about this one. “You’d think the opportunity to race so close to your back yard would be something that really has you pumped,” said Joe Aquilante, co-partner of the ICY / Phoenix Racing team which campaigns a pair of Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B race cars in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge road racing series. What he’s referring to is the Aug. 31 race on a new, country-club style circuit, the New Jersey Motorsports Park near Millville. This will be the track’s first professional sports car race.

Subaru Rally Team USA driver Travis Pastrana won the Ojibwe Forest Rally this weekend, after teammate Ken Block suffered a heartbreaking crash on the final stage of the rally. Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino led the rally from the start, ending Day 1 with a 20 second lead. Pastrana and co-driver Derek Ringer fought hard on Saturday to make up time, but were only able to claw back one second—until Block struck a tree on the final stage.

Just one week out from Father’s Day, six sets of fathers will race their sons at Sydney’s Oran Park Raceway this weekend, aiming for top spot in Round Seven of the Shannons Nationals. Set to spark plenty of discussion over Father’s Day lunch the following Sunday, the family feuds will add extra spice to the on-track competition, with over 170 competitors doing battle across six categories.
